The Story of Mahawatte & Atulugama
Nestled in the Bandaragama area of the Kalutara District, our community has a rich history spanning generations. Here we share the story of where we come from and the traditions that bind us together.
Atulugama
Atulugama is a village located in the Bandaragama Divisional Secretariat of the Kalutara District in the Western Province of Sri Lanka. Surrounded by lush paddy fields, rubber plantations, and coconut groves, the area has been home to farming communities for centuries.
The village is known for its close-knit social fabric, where neighbours support one another through harvests, festivals, and times of need. Atulugama sits along the route connecting Bandaragama to the southern interior, giving it a unique position as both a rural retreat and a connected community.
Over the decades, Atulugama has seen steady growth while preserving its cultural identity. The local temple, schools, and community organisations serve as the pillars of village life.
Mahawatte
Mahawatte is a distinct neighbourhood within Atulugama, named after the “maha watte” — the great garden — that once defined the area. This section of the village has its own character, traditions, and community spirit.
Residents of Mahawatte have always taken pride in collective action. From organising religious ceremonies to maintaining shared infrastructure, the people here understand the power of working together.
Today, Mahawatte is home to families who balance traditional livelihoods with modern opportunities. Many younger residents work in Colombo and other cities while maintaining strong connections to their roots here.
